The Alchemy of Frankincense and Myrrh
In December, Priestess Dani Rose led a blessing and anointing ceremony for the ancient and well-known sacred oils of Frankincense and Myrrh. Frankincense and Myrrh come from tree resin and are burned as incense, distilled into essential oil, or dissolved to make tinctures. They have each been used since ancient times for ritual and somatic medicine. You can even make Frankincense tea out of some varieties!
Used together, Frankincense and Myrrh essential oils are a potent energetic mix. Frankincense represents the divine masculine and Myrhh the divine feminine. Combining the two brings the alchemy of fire and water elements together in one anointing oil called “the Chrism.” Dani Rose calls this mix the “Merkaba” anointing oil because the Merkaba (or Star of David) represents the union of fire and water energies, the merging of the above with the below. The Merkaba Chrism is an excellent anointing oil to use in any ritual setting to bless people, garments, ritual tools, etc. and it is particularly great to use on Fridays (or whatever day you celebrate Shabbat) as Fridays are the day of divine union. Note that the spiritual properties of anointing oils are not fully “activated” until they are blessed, which is the act of calling in the Breath of God or the Rucha d’koosha.
Knowing what you know now, why do you think the three wise men of the nativity story brought Frankincense and Myrrh as gifts to Jesus? The gifts’ intended symbolism is interesting to ponder!
