Cast Your Circle
Consider hosting your next class, workshop, or meet up at Necessary Magic!
Make it happen here.
The Workshop
Rent our 20’x10’ workshop. The workshop can be used for gatherings of up to 15 people. It’s a great space to hold a candle-lit ritual, a workshop, or a crafting class. Rental fees are progressive. You’ll pay Necessary Magic whatever amount you are charging one attendee to your event. If you are taking donations, you will make a donation to Necessary Magic. If your event is free, you will not pay a rental fee.
The Balcony
Our balcony is a great place for a casual meeting. The space can fit a 12’ table and chairs. (We can provide these.) We have a whiteboard and a large television that can be hooked up to a computer to show slides or video. The space is open, so people in the store will be able to hear you and you them. This has not posed a problem for most gatherings. The same progressive rental rate applies for use of the balcony.
The Reading Room
Rent the private reading room for 1-on-1 client work for $15 an hour or $50 per day.
The reading room is quite small! It is a perfect intimate, stylish atmosphere.
To reserve space, please submit your request using the form at the bottom of this page and we will get back to you. All requests are subject to approval to ensure they align with the mission of the shop and our clientele.
Call for Proposals
We are seeking proposals for 1 to 2 hour classes, workshops, lectures, study groups or event ideas on a variety of subjects (see list below). Read more below about our policies and how to get started submitting an event idea.
Marketing Your Event
We highly recommend marketing your event! Turnout in Astoria is notoriously unpredictable and highly weather-dependent. Astorians typically DO NOT register for events ahead of time, so pre-registration is not an indication of final attendance for your event.
To help drive attendees to your event, we recommend the following tips and outlets:
• Post flyers around town! Recommended venues: Necessary Magic, Sleeper Coffee, Blue Scorcher, Fort George, Obelisk, Video Horizons, Cambium Coffee, Astoria Coffee House and Bistro, the Co-op, and Fred Myer (by the bathrooms)
• Paid advertising: The Current (monthly), Hipfish (monthly), the Astorian
• Free calendar listings: The Coast Weekend, Ophelia, Hipfish
• Post your event on your social media and tag @necessary_magic or add us as a collaborator. We will reshare your post to our stories.
Policies
Attendance and Space
The maximum number of students we can accommodate is 15 and depends on how much space you might need for your particular class. Feel free to come by and see the space to help visualize your class set up.
Scheduling
You can work with Dani Rose to schedule your event after you submit your proposal below. Events must end by 6pm PT because that is when the shop closes most days, but please ask about flexibilities if your event requires it.
Cancellations
Plan to show up for your event even if you get few or no pre-registrations. (See “Marketing Your Event” for info.) We work hard to make your event possible! We adjust schedules and work extra hours on some occasions. We manage your event across six marketing platforms. Canceling your event will incur a $80 fee to cover our input costs, emergencies excepted.
Collecting Fees
If you’ll be charging for your event, you set and are responsible for collecting your own fees from attendees. If you use a registration portal such as Eventbrite, send us the link so we can add that to our platforms.
Marketing Policy
You are primarily responsible for marketing your event (e.g., creating marketing materials and distributing them). Necessary Magic will support your marketing efforts* by mentioning your event in our newsletter (~700 subscribers), posting it on our events calendar and social media, and hanging flyers you provide in the store. (*for events that align with our magical mission)
Submit Your Event Idea Here
We’ll review your submission and get back to you asap. If your event is a good fit for Necessary Magic, we’ll reach out to you for marketing materials and additional info.
