Necessary Magic was born out of the wreckage of Covid. In the midst of a COVID layoff, Annie began doing yard work for her landlord in exchange for rent. She had always loved plants and yard work so it was an ideal fit. She ended up with Rosemary and Lavender clippings she just didn’t want to compost (she’s a bit of a hoarder), and approached a friend about what she should do with them. The reply was, “turn them into herb bundles.” It was like lightening striking. She had never thought to create her own herb bundles even though she had been burning sage and Palo Santo as part of her rituals and rune work for years. As a pyromaniac, her next question was, “What else can I burn?” That simple question took Annie down a rabbit hole of delight. Along Portland’s bike trails, herbs and plants started jumping out, calling for Annie’s attention. She started making herb bundles and sending them off to everyone she knew until someone mentioned that she may want to sell them, and the rest is history. Dani Rose joined Necessary Magic in 2025 when the business expanded into a brick and mortar in Astoria.
Growing up in rural Alaska, Annie (she/her) would spend the summers running barefoot through the forest and talking to flowers. She concocted potions and made many of her own toys. The love of making has been a vital aspect of her life, eventually leading her to a Masters in Fine Art. The harsh weather and extreme change in the light in Alaska drew her to a Norse/Celtic pagan spiritual path. As the owner of Necessary Magic she works with Runes, Herbal Magic and Tarot, crafting ritual objects and imbuing them with the intention of bringing healing and beauty into the world. Most of the herbs she uses she has picked herself as well as sourcing them from local farmers. She lives in Astoria, Oregon, and spends her time biking around foraging for herbs, gardening with her partner and going to see movies at the theater. As Annie about getting a rune reading!

Dani Rose (she/her) is a Reiki Master Teacher, clairsentient intuitive, and tarot reader. She was ordained by the Desert Rose Mystery School–a Gnostic mystic tradition that holds that Christ is a union of divine masculine and divine feminine energies. She is a myrraphore, one trained to use sacred healing plant essences used throughout ancient and modern times. She is originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico. After attending graduate school and earning a PhD in sociology, she spent a decade as a normie working in the Washington, DC, area. However, as far back as she can remember, her true interests were always communicating with spirits, making art, camping, singing, and dancing. In her youth she experienced spirits and fairies and was obsessed with learning about everything spooky! In the DC region, she met many amazing spiritual teachers who helped her remember her true path and call to serve. Dani is a co-organizer of Women Who Write to Heal and (as a proud Scorpio Venus) writes romance novels.
